[DE]CONSTRUCTED LANDSCAPES
The exhibition presents a compelling series of 11 drawings, created between 2021 and 2023, for a solo show at M16 Artspace in Griffith, ACT. Executed in watersoluble graphite on synthetic paper, with some works bonded to Di-bond and others framed, these contemporary vanitases weave a sublime narrative of vastness and intimacy, creation and destruction, power and helplessness. The series offers a pictorial representation of seeing, sensing, and thinking, documenting both internal and external landscapes. It is driven by a profound desire to comprehend the current ecological crisis, the scale and complexity of which remain challenging to grasp..
RESILIENCE IN THE NATURAL WORLD
Through distinct artistic lenses, this joint exhibition, showcasing 7 works, drawings and small sculptures by Spangaro, delves into the theme of resilience, alongside Elizabeth M. Cole's small paintings, Spangaro's small sculptures and charcoal drawings specifically explore the visual representation of personal experiences and memories within seemingly insignificant natural environments. Her work critically examines the treatment of abandoned objects, highlighting the degradation of natural landscapes.
SUSPENDED; TIME AND PLACE CHINA 1986 / MELBOURNE 2018,
Suspended: Time and Place brings together the works of Spangaro and Cole to explore the multifaceted concept of suspension across divergent eras and geographies. The exhibition serves as a creative springboard for investigating the tensions between the past and the present, and the dualities of being at home and away. Together, their works offer a poignant reflection on how memory, place, and material presence are held in a delicate, suspended balance.
AN OUTSIDE PERSPECTIVE
The exhibition An Outside Perspective featured five works that explored the often-overlooked aspects of our immediate environments. It delved into natural forms and their context, examining the intersection of time, environment, and happenstance, as well as the profound connections between our interior and exterior worlds that shape individual perspective. Spangaro’s work, both figurative and environmental, investigates the self through the interplay of silence and noise, darkness and light, and the perceived insignificance of place.
